ELECTION 2011: INTERVIEWS WITH LEADERS ON ARTS AND CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
The SAA enlisted Dave Margoshes to interview provincial party leaders about their party’s vision for the arts and creative industries. We want to find out how the arts and creative industries figure as a component of their party’s provincial economic strategy, what measures they will take to improve the circumstances and working conditions of artists in Saskatchewan, and what their position is on increasing funding to the Saskatchewan Arts Board and maintaining the current lottery license agreement. Interviews are scheduled with Victor Lau, Green Party; Ryan Bater, Sask. Liberals; and Dwain Lingenfelter, New Democratic Party. The Saskatchewan Party declined an interview but has supplied written responses to our questions. The interviews will be video recorded and made available on our website, along with text versions of the interviews and the Sask. Party responses.
NEW DOOR STEP KITS, DECALS AND BUTTONS
As elections are an opportune time to raise awareness about the arts, SAA prepared a door step kit to help promote the arts and creative industries. There are interesting facts about the arts and artistic activity in Saskatchewan and Canada, as well as arts-related questions that may be of assistance to find out what candidates’ personal views are when they approach you.
We’ve also made it easy for you to show your commitment to and engagement in the arts with decals, buttons and stickers in four designs inspired by the summer’s Slogan Brainstorm. Download them or contact the SAA if you would like us to send you some.
Thanks to Terry Fenton and Patrick Close for suggesting Art Works, a slogan we use with the kind permission of the NEA (National Endowment of the Arts, USA). Powered by the Arts was inspired by a suggestion from Kelly Hill, and The Arts Live Here came from the SAA’s Slogan Department, influenced by the almost 100 slogans that flowed in over the summer. Our thanks to everyone who participated.

BUTTON BEE HAS PEOPLE BUZZING AT CULTURE DAYS 2011
The SAA partnered with the Dunlop Art Gallery and the Globe Theatre for two Button Bees in downtown Regina for Culture Days. We had a great turnout and people of all ages made their own button designs or chose one of ours. It was a wonderful way to talk to the public about what we do, and arts advocacy in general, while participating in a fun activity. Let us know if you’d like us to come to your community or organization for a button making/advocacy workshop. Check out facebook for photos. Thanks to everyone who stopped by on the mall outside the Globe and inside the Dunlop on that sunny Saturday.
SAA COMMUNITY FORUM AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Community Forum and AGM, held on Saturday, September 17 at The Refinery in Saskatoon, brought together members of the arts community to discuss SAA activity and provide input on our future plans. Topics ranged from the cultural industries community of interest project and SAA’s slogan and visibility campaign to concerns about post-secondary training and funding policies.
From Policy to Action: A proposal for the arts sector was endorsed by the membership at the annual general meeting. It was written by the Action Plan Working Group in alignment with Pride of Saskatchewan principles and outcomes. The plan was sent to members for comment in June 2011.
