We’ve Been Reading…
Online resources in createquity.com’s summary-in-progress of 50 years of studies regarding, “Everything We Know About Whether and How the Arts Improve Lives.” It is “in-progress,” but encouraging, as the introduction sums up: “it is becoming clear in at least several arenas that it’s not just our imagination: arts participation really does improve lives.” So far, this is particularly evidenced in the following areas:
- Participatory arts activities help to maintain the health and quality of life of older adults.
- Arts therapies contribute to positive clinical outcomes, such as reduction in anxiety, stress, and pain for patients.
- Arts participation in early childhood promotes social and emotional development.
- Student participation in structured arts activities enhances cognitive abilities and social skills that support learning, such as memory, problem-solving, and communication.
Report: Digitizing the Performing Arts: An Assessment of Opportunities, Issues and Challenges, funded by Canadian Heritage, commissioned by CAPACOA and undertaken jointly by Strategic Moves and CAPACOA, April 2017.
The report explores several aspects of digital evolution and arts ecosystems with background and context. Focusing on “The Digital Question for Presenters,” the report also offers a survey of the current digital landscape, as well as lessons from other sectors. Next steps include insights for arts organizations as digital technologies become increasingly embedded into everything we do, e.g. “It means examining the role and function of arts service organizations that were built in the analog world and need to learn how to be effective in the digital realm as advocates, catalysts, conveners or aggregators of a new kind” (p 37).
