KELLY HILL TO PRESENT HARD NUMBERS OF PROVINCIAL ARTS AND CULTURE
Plan to attend Kelly Hill’s presentation Arts and Culture in Saskatchewan: Stats and Gaps. With an exceptional understanding of arts disciplines, the situation of artists, and the contribution of the arts to Canadian society, Hill will discuss the hard numbers of the arts and culture within the province.
Following Hill's keynote address, SAA will launch the Arts Ecology Research project. This project came out of the need for factual information about the important role artists play in our society. This is a call to action to you and all artists, help us show the arts matter, please come and participate in the focus groups to ensure this project is on track and will strengthen our advocacy.
RSVP by February 25th as seating is limited.
The event will be held March 2nd at the University of Regina – Education Building, Rm. 193 at 11am – 5pm.
CANADIAN CONFERENCE OF THE ARTS: ANALYSES OF PROVINCIAL AND TERRITORIAL BUDGETS
The Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) published its Analyses of the Provincial and Territorial 2012-13 Budgets from the perspective of arts, culture and heritage. Of particular interest is the analysis of the Saskatchewan budget.
ROBERT ENRIGHT SPEAKS TO THE ARTS IN FEBRUARY’S EDITION OF OP-ED/LIVING THE ARTS
Check out the latest SAA electronic article, Telling the Laity of Our Love: Current Engagements in the Literacy of Art featuring cultural journalist and art critic Robert Enright: “I’ve suggested that the arts are critical, and if you took the meaning of the word to be ‘necessary,’ then you were right. But I also mean to utilize its contrary sense; that the arts can be critical of the social and political values which surround them. The arts are critical of values, and the arts have value.”

The new SAA website is finished and we are asking our member organizations to send images of their upcoming or recently past events. The selected images will be showcased on our home page with a brief caption describing the event and organization.
THE UNIVERSITY OF REGINA SENATE VOTES TO CUT BA MAJOR AND MINOR IN ARTS AND CULTURE
The University of Regina Senate voted to cut the BA major and minor in arts and culture, an interdisciplinary individualized program offered jointly by the Faculties of Arts and Fine Arts and Luther College.
CANADIAN ARTISTS AND PRODUCERS PROFESSIONAL RELATIONS TRIBUNAL (CAPPRT)
The federal Jobs, Growth and Long-Term Prosperity Act, which received Royal Assent on June 29, 2012, amended the Status of the Artist Act to abolish CAPPRT and transfer all responsibilities for the administration of the Act to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). The amendments do not affect the validity of the certification orders; it will simply transfer to the CIRB the responsibility of issuing and renewing the certification orders. The amendments will have implications on adjacent rules, regulations, and proceedures. CAPPRT is currently working with staff from the CIRB on revising legal documents to ensure their compliance with the modifications. Ms. Diane Chartrand, Executive Director and General Counsel of CAPPRT has been appointed Deputy Executive Director and Senior Director of Policy and Planning at the CIRB, to coincide with when the amendments come into force. Ms. Chartrand will act as key resources for all matters related to the Status of the Artist Act.
MENDEL ART GALLERY WELCOMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
The Board of Trustees of the Mendel Art Gallery, and the future Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan, is pleased to announce the appointment of Gregory Burke as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. Acclaimed as a gallery director, curator and writer over his 27-year career, Burke is respected for leading programs that have significantly elevated both the profile and visitation rates of the institutions for which he has worked.
