STATS AND GAPS: THE ARTS IN SASKATCHEWAN A SUCCESS
The SAA would like to thank those who came out to Stats and Gaps: The Arts in Saskatchewan on March 2nd at the University of Regina. Kelly Hill, President and Founder of Hill Strategies Research Inc. discussed the hard numbers in regards to cultural participation, spending, and the importance of cultural exposure. His presentation can be found on Hill’s website.
The official launch of the Arts Ecology Project, led by Dr. Mary Blackstone of the University of Regina and SAA board member, followed Hill’s presentation. Attendants later broke out into focus groups, which encouraged participants to give input into the overall project.

SAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS IN MOOSE JAW FOR COMMUNITY RECEPTION/RETREAT
The SAA board of directors will be meeting in Moose Jaw for their annual retreat. They SAA will be holding a reception for the arts community on March 22nd at the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery at 8 pm. The Board wants to learn what matters to the arts in Moose Jaw and surrounding area.

FIRST RECIPIENTS OF CREATIVE INDUSTRIES FUND ANNOUNCED
The first recipients of Creative Industries Transition Fund (CITF) grants represent a wide variety of genres in the Saskatchewan creative industries, including music, theatre, publishing, film and interactive media. The Saskatchewan Arts Board awarded $214,225 for 11 different projects after the first round of assessments for CITF grants.
Applications for the $1-million short-term grant program are accepted on a continuous basis. The second round of assessments will include applications received by noon on March 15, 2013, and the final round will include applications received by noon on April 12, 2013. The Creative Industries Transition Fund is administered by the Saskatchewan Arts Board and funded through an agreement with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport.
COURT SIDES WITH NATIONAL GALLERY ON ARTIST'S FEES
In a split decision, the Federal Court of Appeal decided that the National Gallery of Canada did not negotiate in bad faith with CARFAC and their Quebec partner RAAV. The Court ruled that artists have the right to be paid less than the minimum fees if they choose. CARFAC and RAAV want to establish minimum fees that would be binding – the equivalent of a minimum wage.
In 2007, during bargaining for a scale agreement, the National Gallery unilaterally refused to continue to negotiate binding minimum exhibition and reproduction fees for the use of artists' work. CARFAC and RAAV filed a complaint and the gallery was initially found guilty of bargaining in bad faith. The gallery asked for a judicial review, which they won. CALL TO MEMBERS: SAA PROMOTES MEMBERS
The new SAA website is finished and we are asking our member organizations to send images of their upcoming or recently past events. The selected images will be showcased on our home page with a brief caption describing the event and organization.
CULTURAL EXCHANGE CALL TO ARTIST FOR WORKSHOP TOUR
The Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange Society is seeking submissions from artists for its 29th Workshop Tour. Artists travel to Saskatchewan schools for an eight-week period starting in September/October 2013. Applicants should also indicate whether they wish to be considered for the Tour Manager position. Fees are $365 per day of workshop delivery.
Please submit a resume and a brief outline of a workshop in your area of specialty that you could present, in an adaptable fifty-minute format, to divisions 1 through 3. Electronic submissions are acceptable or you may fax to 306.780.9487 or send via the mail.

- advocating healthy levels of public and private support
- encouraging public acknowledgement of the arts
- encouraging and assisting in the development of arts education
- providing information related to the arts
- providing a forum for issues affecting the arts and cultural industries.
