We’d like your views on the Community of Interest (COI) designation for Cultural Industries. If you haven’t weighed in, Friday’s your last chance. The survey takes 10 minutes.

SAA RESEARCH: PROVINCIAL SPENDING ON ARTS AND CULTURE
Hill Strategies Research was commissioned to analyse government spending on the arts and culture in Saskatchewan using Statistics Canada’s most recent data from 2008/09.

Provincial government spending on the arts and culture in Saskatchewan in 2008/09 examines spending in various culture areas and provides a comparison of spending among the provinces. The report includes sections on total provincial government spending on culture, spending on the arts and cultural industries, spending on specific cultural line items, grants to the arts and culture, changes since 2003/04, and detailed tables. Among the provinces, Saskatchewan ranks 2nd in per capita spending for culture areas overall (arts, cultural industries, libraries, heritage and other), 5th in per capita spending in the arts, and 1st in per capita spending in cultural industries. In comparison, federal government spending on culture in Saskatchewan was $57.4 million in 2008/09, which translates to $57 per Saskatchewanian and a 9th place ranking among the provinces.

NEW MEMBERS OF STANDING COMMITTEE ON CANADIAN HERITAGE ANNOUNCED
The government has released the names of the new standing committee. They are: Charlie Angus, Scott Armstrong, Tyrone Benskin, Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet, Gordon Brown, Paul Calandra, Parm Gill, Jim Hillyer, Rob Moore, Pierre Nantel, Scott Simms and Terence Young. The Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) recently posted some background on the committee members and on other committees that have an impact on arts and culture.

NATIONAL HOUSEHOLD SURVEY OUT NOW
In addition to the 2011 Census, one in three households across Canada is also asked to participate in the new National Household Survey (NHS). Information previously collected by the long-form census questionnaire is now collected as part of this new survey.

The NHS gathers information on a wide variety of topics including demography, activity limitations, citizenship and immigration, language, Aboriginal group, religion, mobility, education, place of work, mode of transportation, income and housing. The NHS is very important because it will provide your community the information it needs to plan services such as child care, schooling, family services, housing, roads and public transportation, and skills training for employment. The data are also used to support government programs directed at target populations, such as immigrants, Aboriginal populations, lone-parent families and seniors.

The NHS will provide a portrait of communities in 2011 and a reference for decision makers not only at a federal and provincial level but in your community too. We encourage everyone who has been selected to respond to this survey. Visit the NHS website here.

CULTURE DAYS 2011
SaskCulture is offering sponsorships designed to help support new and existing interactive cultural activities, events and projects groups during Culture Days, September 26 through October 2, 2011. Applications must be received or postmarked on June 30, 2011. Held for the first time last year, Culture Days is a collaborative, pan-Canadian movement designed to raise awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the artistic and cultural life of their communities. FAMILY DONATES $30 MILLION FOR NEW SASKATOON ART GALLERY
A donation of $30 million by the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation, the largest single gift of its type in the province’s history, has been made to Saskatoon’s planned new art gallery. The Mendel Art Gallery will become the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan. Ellen Remai, whose family made its fortune in real estate only to give away millions to charity, said the grant is a way to give back to the community. Click here for more on this historic donation.

SAA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND COMMUNITY FORUM
