With many members of the arts community in attendance, the 2014 Arts Congress touched on love, hope, and creating art in the ashes. Check out the keynote speeches, now available on SAA’s website:
Friday night Keynote speaker Michael Greyeyes discussed conflict as intensely creative. He reminded Congress delegates that despite the current age of de-funding and reduced opportunities, nothing has changed and the arts will thrive. International award-winning journalist and author Alanna Mitchell inspired both tears and laughter from the audience with her emotional journey from the bottom of the ocean onto the stage in her one-woman play out of her best-selling book Sea Sick: The Global Ocean in Crisis. Carolyn Warren, Vice-President, Arts, of the Banff Centre, shared her thoughts on creativity, the arts, and resilience in regards to rejuvenation.

SAA’S ARTS ADVOCACY VIDEO REACHES 2500 VIEWS ON YOUTUBE
The Saskatchewan Arts Alliance is proud to announce that over 2500 people have viewed its short video Arts Matter on YouTube. Arts Matter is a short film made in partnership with the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative. The video features Rory Allen, Tom Bartlett, Sandra Birdsell, Katherine Boyer, Amber Christensen, Hon. Kevin Doherty, Milena Dzordeski, Pierre Lhéritier, Mirtha Rivera, Kim Sutherland, and Misty Wensel.
PREMIER BRAD WALL RE-ORGANIZES CABINET: NEW MINISTER OF PARKS, CULTURE AND SPORT
Premier Brad Wall re-organized his cabinet on June 5th, changing the responsibilities of about half of his ministers. Premier Wall appointed Mark Docherty as the Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport (PCS) and responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission. Kevin Doherty is now Minister of Advanced Education and Minister responsible for SaskTel. The SAA welcomes Minister Docherty and thanks Minister Kevin Doherty for his work as Minister and wishes him the best in his new portfolio of Advanced Education. The SAA has enjoyed working with the Ministry on behalf of our membership and the Saskatchewan arts sector.
CLARITY ON CANADA’S ANTI-SPAM LAW
Canada’s new anti-spam law was passed in December 2010 and, following a Governor in Council order, it will enter into force on July 1, 2014. For more information on the legislation and how you may need to comply, please visit www.fightspam.gc.ca.
Imagine Canada has prepared 2 FAQs – one for registered charities and one for not-for-profit organizations that also will be of interested to registered charities that carry out activities that fall outside the exemption. Note that the information provided by Imagine Canada, while not constituting legal advice, sets out its best policy understanding of the regulations and their requirements, and has been shared with and commented on by the Industry Canada officials responsible for the regulations.
REVIEW OF THE CANADIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY TABLED
On June 12th the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage tabled its report Review of the Canadian Music Industry in Parliament. The report makes recommendations for strengthening federal government support for the Canadian music industry. It includes sections on digital distribution and streaming, music education, music tourism, current funding – future investment, and FACTOR/Musicaction. The report also includes a Supplementary Report for the New Democratic Party, and a Complementary Report by the Liberal Party. To view the report.
