2014 ARTS CONGRESS FOCUS: LOVE, HOPE, CREATING ART IN THE ASHES
With many members of the arts community in attendance, the 2014 Arts Congress touched on love, hope, and creating art in the ashes.
Friday night Keynote speaker Michael Greyeyes discussed conflict as intensely creative, like fire it is necessary to burn away all that doesn’t need to be there. He reminded Congress delegates that ash is fertile and that despite the current age of de-funding and reduced opportunities, nothing has changed and the arts will thrive.
International award-winning journalist and author Alanna Mitchell inspired both tears and laughter from the audience at the2014 Arts Congress with her emotional journey that took her from the bottom of the ocean and onto the stage when she recently created a one-woman play out of her best-selling book Sea Sick: The Global Ocean in Crisis.
Carolyn Warren, Vice-President, Arts, of the Banff Centre, shared her thoughts on creativity, the arts, and resilience in regards to rejuvenation – how the sector is fighting to communicate its relevance and how there needs to be a connection between arts and leadership.
Stories from the Art touched on ideas and experiences of belonging, disability, conflict, ugly truths, and collaboration featuring artists Adam Pottle, Curtis Peeteetuce, Carrie Catherine, Lorin Gardypie, Zachari Logan, and Lori Blondeau.
Other Congress highlights included the Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport Honorable Kevin Doherty who spoke with SAA board member Kelley Jo Burke about the arts sector in Saskatchewan, the panel Extreme Thinkers Love Big with Carolyn Warren, Ellen Moffat, Brenda Baker, and Hugh Neilson.
In her presentation, director Mary Blackstone described the SSHRC-funded project which studies the social, cultural and economic roles of the arts and creativity in Saskatchewan. SPAR’s first research project – “Understanding the Arts Ecology of Saskatchewan” – has started with two surveys for Artists and the General Public. Both are “live” until May 14th. Find out about SPAR: www2.uregina.ca/spar.
