Saskatchewan Arts Alliance Board of Directors
SAA is pleased to introduce its 2018/2019 Board of Directors.
Newly elected board members are Rob Bos, visual artist and arts administrator; Will Brooks, Artistic Director, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan; returning to the Board from an interim position is Karen Reynaud, General Manager of Saskatoon Opera.
Dr. Kathryn Ricketts, dance artist, educator, and Assistant Professor in Arts Education at the University of Regina remains as President: Here at the SAA we work hard to champion the arts through our research and advocacy efforts. I am honoured to be part of such a vital and dynamic organization that continues to move towards a province where the arts not only survive but thrive!
Remaining on the Board are Past President Kelley Jo Burke, writer, playwright and broadcaster; Mary Blackstone, Professor Emerita in the Department of Theatre and Director of the Centre for the Study of Script Development at the U of R; James Hodges, President of Roadside Attractions Inc., and independent producer of theatre, dance and music; Daniel Parr, Program Officer, SaskBooks; and Risa Payant, Executive Director, Common Weal Community Arts.

Things we’ve Been Reading…
While researching at the SAA, we discover a lot of interesting information and we like to share some of it with you:
- Focus groups on Canadians’ participation in the arts : final report -Following up on the Arts and Heritage Access and Availability Survey 2016-17, the Department of Canadian Heritage commissioned focus groups to find out more about Canadian’s participation in the arts. SAA has used some of the survey data in our recent Art Facts as well as for our submission to the SSCF 2018 Regina and South Saskatchewan Vital Signs Report.
- 2016 Census app: Compare Data for Two Areas – A quick and easy way to compare statistics for two areas (by census divisions or federal ridings). Compare Regina and Saskatoon; Moose Jaw to Prince Albert; Yorkton to York… whatever strikes for fancy!
- The Impact of Artists on Contemporary Urban Development – Cities have always functioned as focal points of civilizational and economic development, innovation and creativity, enabling regions and countries to uphold or improve their competitive position. Existing theoretical concepts referring to or incorporating artists seem too general and insufficient as full explanations of spatial and entrepreneurial patterns of artists’ activities in the urban space and further research seems necessary. We present a comprehensive edition, including case studies across all of Europe.

Recipients of the 2018 Saskatchewan Arts Awards
The Saskatchewan Arts Alliance congratulates the recipients of the 2018 Saskatchewan Arts Awards. Presented on October 25 at Casino Regina the event also marked the 70th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, the arts awards celebrate the contributions and achievements of individuals, groups and organizations in all arts disciplines. Recipients are awarded a limited-edition sculpture by Saskatchewan artist Jody Greenman-Barber and a cash prize. To view a full list of the 2018 recipients, click here.
Congratulations to OSAC for Fifty Years of Success!
OSAC won the 2018 Sask. Arts Awards for Organizational Leadership. This year marks 50 years since OSAC was started by eight Arts Councils from around the province. As part of their 50th Anniversary Celebration they asked videographer, and past OSAC staff member, Michelle Brownridge to interview OSAC Board, Staff and Friends past and present about OSAC and what it means to them. The 2018 SIFA Nominee Announcement
The Fifth Annual Saskatchewan Independent Film Awards (SIFA) will announce its 2018 SIFA Nominees live on Nov 2nd at 12:00pm, noon, Filmpool Office. Nominations will be announced in 5 categories: Best Short Film, Best Student Film, Best Feature Film, Best Acting and Best Technical Achievement.
The Saskatchewan Independent Film Awards, presented by the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative, is an annual event to support, showcase and celebrate Saskatchewan’s dynamic independent filmmaking community. The 2018 SIFA’s will be held Friday, November 23rd at Regina’s Artesian Theatre.
Join the Conversation: Anti-Racism Engagement
The Department of Canadian Heritage is inviting Canadians to participate in an online survey on racism and discrimination as it relates to employment and income supports, social participation which includes access to arts, sport and leisure and justice. The deadline to participate in this survey is on Sunday, December 9, 2018. Canadian Heritage and the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan (MCoS) will be holding a consultation on developing an anti-racism strategy on Thursday, November 15, 2018 in Saskatoon. Premier Moe’s First Throne Speech
The new session of the Legislature opened with a Throne Speech which included introducing new trespassing legislation, allowing for more policing in rural areas and changing commercial driver training. These priorities were among those highlighted in the throne speech Wednesday afternoon, delivered by Lieutenant Governor W. Thomas Molloy, which opened the fall sitting of the Saskatchewan legislature. For more information, click here.
